Top 10 essentials for your winter handbag

Winter Wonderland

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, it's obvious that the glorious summer we've had has given way to autumn and winter. The last few winters have been bitterly cold with numerous snowfalls, but that shouldn't deter you from getting outside and flaunting your winter fashion.

Whether you're travelling to work, school or visiting a traditional Christmas market, your handbag is your best friend. It's the place to keep your essential accessories that'll help keep you warm, dry and most importantly safe during the winter months. Here are some of the top essentials for every handbag.

Lip Balms

The cold weather can cause your lips to become dry and without proper treatment they can crack and become very painful. To help reduce your chances of developing chapped lips you should carry around lip balms. They will help re-moisten your lips and protect them from the cold weather, many are available in different flavours and colours so why not add them to your winter style while out and about? If you’re only after a basic protection then Vaseline works just as well.

Hand Creams

Like your lips, your skin can also become dry and cracked due to the cold weather. The best way to protect against this is to carry hand cream or lotion in your handbag to help soothe your skin. If you apply some before you go outdoors it can also help protect your skin from the cold temperatures.

Scarves and Gloves

It goes without saying that scarves and gloves are a must have essential for any handbag this winter. They really shouldn't be in the handbag as you should be wearing them, but if you find you don’t need them, you still need to carry them. They will help protect your skin from the elements whilst keeping your hands and neck warm.

Tissues sound obvious but you’d be surprised how many people don’t carry them. The cold weather can make your nose run and if that’s not treated you can end up with a bright red nose like Rudolph! This can be painful, so always keep tissues in your handbag to keep your nose healthy.

It may sound strange but dehydration can be just as common in the winter as in the summer. If you’re out walking it’s important to stay hydrated, this is extremely important if you’re walking through snow. As you’re probably aware, snow isn’t the easiest substance to walk through or over and can require more effort meaning you’ll need to take on more water.

The British winter is very unpredictable, if you live in Abergavenny or Hereford you’ll know that the heavens can open at any time so it’s important to carry a fold down umbrella in your handbag. If you’re caught outside without one and you get wet, the cold temperatures mixed with the moisture can lead to minor health complications, even serious ones in some cases.

Charged mobile phone

Whether you’re out walking or driving this winter a charged mobile phone is essential. It can be used in case of emergencies such as a car breakdown or if you find yourself lost and need to get hold of someone. It’s also useful should someone need to get hold of you.

Like we mentioned in our top essentials for your handbag blog, painkillers such as Aspirin can be useful if you develop a headache. Headaches can be common in the winter due to the shifting temperature differences. You should also carry around any medications you require for any medical conditions such as allergies.

Spare pair of shoes

During the winter months, chances are the ground is likely to be wet due to rain or snow, if you find yourself with extremely wet shoes it can be uncomfortable. If you walk to work or school, having another pair of shoes to change into can make the day far more comfortable.

Just like in the summer months a pair of sunglasses are essential. If you’re driving after a snow storm they’ll help reduce the glare reflected from the snow. Remember, sun rays can damage your eyes all year round so it’s important to protect them all year round!
